Then when Eclipse auto-compiled a class, it wouldn't find any of the other required classes.) Project -> Clean worked for me but I wanted a more permanent solution. Why is (a % 256) different than (a & 0xFF)? The setting I chose to change was: File > Properties > Java Build Path > Order and Export > make a meaningless order change > Apply. I'm sure this is something that's obvious to someone with experience, and I'm hoping one of those "someones" will post a solution.

I had a large MFC C++ project that I passed through a commercial code converter that was supposed to convert the project to Java. So right click on the project in Package explorer > Plug-in tools > Update classpath... I can right click on the main pom.xml and Run a Maven build (clean compile) and build finishes successfully.
